Dexter Wimberly talks Persevering, Dreaming Bigger, and Turning Setbacks into Opportunity
New episode of Beyond the Studio podcast
If you’ve been a longtime listener of Beyond the Studio, then you’ll recognize Dexter Wimberly as one of the co-founders of CreativeStudy (formerly Art World Conference). He’s been a previous guest of the podcast, along with Heather Bhandari (you can listen to our two previous interviews on building better professional infrastructure for the art world, and expanding financial literacy for artists here and here).
However, we haven’t had the chance to dive into Dexter’s work as an independent curator and entrepreneur (having just curated a mid-career survey of Derrick Adams’ work at the ICA Boston), or his personal backstory, like we do in this episode of the podcast.
You’ll hear more from Dexter on persevering through personal challenges while embracing change, making an early career pivot into the art world from marketing & advertising, supporting artists in their professional development through his work as an independent curator, founder of Hayama Artist Residency, co-founder of CreativeStudy (formerly Art World Conference) and Senior Critic at New York Academy of Art, bringing an entrepreneurial mindset to every aspect of life, and giving ourselves permission to dream bigger.
You have to have a healthy dose of blind optimism. You need to have it in there. Because so much about our lives…is about a leap of faith. There has to be a leap in there.
And if you don't believe that, what tends to happen is, you start taking what you consider to be the safe route, in every way.
What we were most inspired by was Dexter’s perspective and attitude on facing life’s unpredictability, and how he’s managed to turn hardships into real opportunities for personal growth and change.
If you’ve ever been at a crossroads in your life & career, or faced with the immense uncertainty change can bring, this episode is a must-listen.
